What the Eucharist Is
In this sacred sacrament, Christ associates His Church with His sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving offered once for all on the cross. “Eucharist” comes from the Greek for thanksgiving — the Real Presence of Christ, His continuing action as High Priest, and the Sacrament of Holy Communion itself.

Receiving Holy Communion Worthily
Participate Fully
Arrive early, pray, listen attentively to the readings, respond to the prayers, and take part in the Mass.
In a State of Grace
Be free from mortal sin — if conscious of mortal sin, seek the Sacrament of Reconciliation first. Live in communion with the Church, including the Sacrament of Matrimony if married.
The Eucharistic Fast
Abstain from food and drink (except water and medicine) for at least one hour before receiving Holy Communion.
